CAopenEd Research Fellowship – Due December 1, 2023

Overview:

In 2021, the California Alliance for Open Education (CAopenEd) was launched with a mission “To equip campus leaders with the training, guidance, and resources needed to reduce course material costs and increase student success.” A central component of that mission is the formation of an intersegmental research team to develop empirically-informed best practices, university procedures, and/or statewide legislative policies for the purpose of improving textbook affordability, enhancing student equity, and increasing the use of openly-licensed materials.

In total, three Research Fellows will be selected from across the California Community College, California State University, and University of California systems. The Fellowship is a two year commitment, spanning from January 2024-December 2025. Research Fellows will collaborate together to design, develop, and implement an original research project from beginning to end. The final deliverable is expected to take on the form of a professional conference or journal submission. To aid in the process, Research Fellows will be granted access to data sets via CSU’s Office of the Chancellor and Affordable Learning Solutions (AL$). Research Fellow will also be compensated $2,000 for their time and expertise.

The application process is now open. A review of applicants will begin on December 1st, 2023. Applicants will be notified in January 2024. The research team’s final deliverables are expected to be complete by December 2025, and must be shared broadly via Creative Commons licensing.

Eligibility:

This opportunity is open to all staff and faculty members, regardless of rank, who are currently employed by the California Community College, California State University, or University of California systems – both full- and part-time. If possible, priority will be given to creating an intersegmental research team by including representation from each level of California’s higher education system.

Selection:

Research Fellows will be chosen according to the following four criteria: (1) Open Awareness, (2) Research Experience, (3) Contributive Potential, and (4) Collaborative Ability.

  1. Open Awareness: How knowledgeable is the applicant about OER, open research/pedagogy, student equity and efficacy, etc.?
  2. Research Experience: How much experience does the applicant have with completing original academic research?
  3. Contributive Potential: How does the applicant anticipate contributing to the larger research team; what skills, abilities, and/or expertise do they offer?
  4. Collaborative Ability: How well can the applicant collaborate with diverse colleagues, spanning multiple institutions and various academic disciplines?
